Alone we can go fast; together we can go far.  (African Proverb)

First, my deep thanks to all who gathered at the Diocesan Convention last weekend, and all those whose labors helped make our gathering meaningful. I was especially grateful for the prayers that sustained and informed our work, and the care taken by so many to create a hospitable environment for all.

In addition to the important work of the convention, we had the opportunity to be inspired by Dr. Lisa Kimball and to discuss congregational development ideas. It also afforded me an opportunity to articulate in one address the priorities and goals of these early days of my episcopate. I pray that I was clear in my commitment to work in collaboration with you. Only together can we discern the Spirit’s presence in our midst and what it means to be faithful People of the Way—Jesus’ way—in our time.

Collaborative work, by definition, takes time and intentionality in relationship. Yet there is also a holy urgency to God’s call, that we live fully into this moment and face with confidence and hope the real challenges before us.

Whenever I find myself overwhelmed by life or the seemingly impossible work that is before me, I remember St. Paul’s encouraging words to the Church in Philippi, a short letter well worth reading in its entirety. May his words encourage us as well:

I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion (1:6)

And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best…(1:9-10)

Work out your own salvation in fear and trembling, for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure. (2:12-13)

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (4:4-7)

May God bless us all, as together we walk the way of Jesus.

I am so glad I was able to attend Friday. Your session in the afternoon was wonderful. Our Episcopal Church has much to offer the world. We need to grow. I hope I can help. I think I can.

Convention was wonderful this year. I particularly liked the format. The mood was positive and uplifting while acknowledging that we have a lot of work to do.
