From the Priest-in-Charge
We are now in Holy week. This is the time when we remember what Jesus suffered for us to enable us truly to enter into his life. The powers of darkness did everything they could to humiliate and destroy Jesus, and yet God took that horrible moment in which even Jesus’ friends betrayed him to show us what true faithfulness looks like.
Jesus did this for each of us, and it’s not just a far-off wistful hope that we are given. Eternal life begins here right now. Yes, the empty tomb and the appearances of Jesus among his disciples demonstrated vividly that God did raise Jesus from the dead. It was so amazing that at first the disciples couldn’t believe it, but when they at last took it in, they were transformed from being a cowardly, grieving, paralyzed group, into confident, exuberant folk who eventually “turned the world upside down.” And so can we.
This joy and confidence belonged not only to those first disciples, but are his gifts to us now as we recall the mighty events of the final days of Jesus’ earthly ministry, events that give us life today.
