The Episcopal Diocese of Washington

A diocese is made up of local congregations with a bishop as its chief pastor. The Episcopal Diocese of Washington comprises 93 Episcopal congregations in the District of Columbia and the Maryland counties of Montgomery, Prince George's, Charles and Saint Mary's. This diocese also includes Washington National Cathedral. The bishop of the Diocese of Washington is the Rt. Rev. John Bryson Chane. There are approximately 40,000 baptized worshipers in the Diocese of Washington and about 2.3 million in the Episcopal Church nationwide. The Episcopal Church is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion (75 million members).

Vision Statement
The vision of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington is the people of God living out their faith together.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Diocese of Washington is to build up the Body of Christ by equipping the people of the Diocese, individually and together, to carry out their ministries in the world.

Macro mission goals are:

  • To build healthy, interdependent mission-driven congregations
  • To develop plentiful resources, both human and financial
  • To sound a prophetic voice in the community, the nation and the world
