New Vocational Guidelines Issued

After a two month period of public comment the Commission on Ministry (COM) voted to approve new guidelines for those discerning a call to ministry.

Discernment Process [pdf - updated 06/24/10]

These guidelines address vocation for those seeking to serve the church as priests and those seeking a call to serve the world and the church as laity. Draft guidelines for a vocational diaconate are being completed by the COM and will be available for public comment in the fall of 2007 along with guidelines for those seeking ordination in the Episcopal Church who have been ordained in other traditions.

Vocational Ministry Retreats
The Diocesan Commission on Ministry sponsors discernment retreats for those seeking to discern a call to lay or ordained ministry. For more information, click here.

Church Deployment Office
Located at the Episcopal Church Center in New York, The Church Deployment Office (CDO) maintains computer listings on all ECUSA clergy and lay professional that open a file with them. Clergy should regularly update their CDO profile and make sure that their profile notes that they are opened to being considered for new positions.

CDO registration makes you eligible to subscribe to the Positions Open Bulletin, with the following three options:

  • A listing of open positions printed and mailed monthly ($25)
  • An internet searchable listing of open positions, updated weekly ($30)
  • Both versions of the P.O.B., printed and electronic ($40)

Deployment Ministry Conference
The Deployment Ministry Conference is an association of almost forty Dioceses east of the Mississippi. The Deployment Ministry Conference provides two primary services to clergy seeking new calls and congregations seeking new clergy.

A) The Deployment Ministry Newsletter
The Transition Ministry Conference, a coalition of deployment/transition officers from 36 dioceses in The Episcopal Church makes available an online newsletter of all position openings in member dioceses. The newsletter is updated in real time by deployment/transition officers. The newsletter may be viewed at http://tmn.edow.org.

B) Bi-annual Deployment Ministry Conferences
Deployment Officers from the member dioceses gather twice a year in March and in October to share information with each other about clergy who are interested in exploring new calls and congregations that seek new clergy. Clergy who will like to be presented at the conference should contact the Diocese Deployment Officer.

Transitional/Interim Ministry
The Diocese of Washington requires that clergy who are interested in interim ministry have interim ministry training. This three-phase training may be taken during an interim ministry placement.

Clergy seeking more information about interim ministry training should visit the Interim Ministry Network Online, or contact them here: 5740 Executive Drive, Ste 220, Baltimore, MD 21228, Tel. 800-235-8414.
