Episcopal Diocese of Washington
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I have written to you each spring for five years now, asking that you support the Bishop’s Appeal, which supplements the operating budget of our diocese. And I am particularly grateful to those of you who have responded so generously. In past letters, I have invoked the importance of our outreach to the area’s growing Latino population, to college students and to our partners in ministry in countries such as Honduras and South Africa. This year, I would like to focus on the work that the diocese does for you and the other members of your congregation. As you will see in the enclosed brochure, the diocese provides essential services to each of its 92 congregations. Perhaps your parish has received guidance in finding a new rector, or help with its Web site or its cyber-security. Perhaps your son or daughter has taken part in one of our many youth events. Maybe your parish has employed a diocesan-subsidized consultant during a time of transition. Or maybe you have come to count on the Washington Window, Episcopal Café, and the diocesan Web site to keep you up to date on developments within our Church and our culture. Each of these vital ministries is evidence of a fact that many would deny: that an inclusive, open-hearted Christianity—captive to neither secularists, nor fundamentalists—can flourish in our ideologically-divided world. This is the distinctive witness of our diocese, a witness that runs counter to the conventional wisdom that thinking people do not believe and believing people do not think. The strength of this witness depends heavily upon your generosity. So I ask, once again, that you consider making a donation to support the work our diocese does and the values that it stands for.
