Episcopal Church Women
Washington Chapter

The Episcopal Church Women (ECW) is a national Episcopal organization that helps the women of the Episcopal Church carry on Christ's work of reconciliation in the world and take their place as leaders in the life, governance and worship of the church. It is formed, and serves, women of all ages, ethnic origins, and socio-economic backgrounds in the Episcopal Church. The ECW offers programs and opportunities in spiritual growth and nourishment, fellowship, education, leadership and skills training, focus for mission, service, social action and advocacy, heightened awareness, ecumenism and a world wide network.

The Washington Chapter of the ECW sees itself as the women's network of the Diocese, and as such is in touch with and represents all types and conditions of women within the Church. One of our major purposes is to uphold the image of women on the diocesan level and also in their home parishes. We affirm the diversity of roles women have and lift up and recognize the many possibilites for ministry available to lay and ordained women.

The Washington Chapter of the ECW consists of over 85 organized groups from all regions in our diocese. The members and the ECW board plan and organize lectures, programs and events througout the year.

The Washington Chapter of ECW receives contributions for the Memorial Scholarship Fund, United Thank Offering and the Church Periodical Club.

Instructions for collecting and submitting contributions:

The Memorial Scholarship Fund, established in 1925, assists women in receiving post-graduate education for their careers in Christian ministries. Contributions are made by parishes in memory of deceased women. The names of the women are recorded a Book of Remembrance. Contributions must be accompanied by a completed form and submitted to the ECW office.

The United Thank Offering is a way to give thanks to God through daily giving, using the little blue boxes. Parish “ingatherings” should be held twice a year (fall and spring). Some parishes celebrate these ingatherings during a service and use an Alms Basin for the collection and the stole for the priest. These items maybe borrowed from the ECW office upon request. For more information about UTO, go to http://www.episcopalchurch.org/uto/

Copies of the United Thank Offering application are available October 1 each year in the Office of the Episcopal Church Women. Please call (202) 537-6530 or email ecw@edow.org and leave your address and telephone or fax number. Deadline for submission is the 2 nd Friday in December of the same year.

The Church Periodical Club, founded more than 100 years ago, provides printed and audiovisual materials to isolated parts of the world, ensuring that the needs of seminarians and shut-ins are met everywhere. CPC Sunday is presently celebrated on the first Sunday in May when contributions are collected from the parishes. However, each Parish is encouraged to have a CPC Sunday at anytime that is convenient. Please send a check that combines the contributions to the Office of the Episcopal Church Women, Diocese of Washington, Church House, Mount Saint Albans, Washington DC 20016.
