Lay Employment Guidelines

The lay employment policies and guidelines document includes information on best practices, management, job titles, compensation, and benefit packages for lay employees in the church. Insurance and Pension Benefits

Health, Disability and Life Insurance is available to all clergy and lay professionals employed in the Diocese of Washington. Information is available on this site about health, disability and life insurance, eligibility, enrollment, claims and policy cancellation procedures. Also available here is information on pension and other benefits available to employees.

Each parish is considered their own employing unit and should create their own guidelines for benefit participation.

Health and Dental Insurance
Includes information on available coverage, insurance enrollment and cancellation procedures, enrollment and claim forms, and who to contact with insurance questions. (Including Gym membership discounts)

Disability Insurance
Information on long-term and short-term disability for full-time clergy and lay employees.

Life Insurance
Information on life insurance in the Diocese of Washington.

Pension Benefits
Where to find information and forms for retirement planning, pension fund enrollments and other publications.

Long-Term Care Insurance
Employees may purchase this insurance to cover the care they may require when they advance in age or if they acquire a chronic illness in which they may no longer be able to care for themselves without the assistance of another.

Death Benefit for Widows and Children of Clergy
Clergy canonically resident in the dioceses of Maryland, Washington and Easton are eligible to join The Corporation for Relief of the Widows and Children of the Clergy of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Maryland. The Corporation extends benefits to spouses, "domestic partners” and economically dependent children of deceased members who have been canonically resident for at least five years in one of the three dioceses.
