The Bishop's Appeal

An Appeal from Bishop Mariann

April 10, 2012

Dear Friends,

I write to you during a time of renewal, both in nature and for the Episcopal Church. The Spirit is blowing through our diocese, calling for a revitalization of our congregations and our core ministries in order that we might better serve Christ and His mission.

Easter reminds us of how blessed we are by the presence and power of Christ, doing for us what we cannot do ourselves. In a world that cries out for hope, Jesus assures us that nothing can separate us from the love of God, that death is never the final word, and that Christ is with us always, empowering us to do serve as agents of reconciliation and peace in His name.

I am convinced that the Episcopal Church, with our generous theology, appreciation of mystery and openness to the truths of science, passion for justice and love of prayer, commitment to ancient traditions and the spirit of our time, is needed more than ever in today’s world. God needs the Episcopal Church now. And if we are to live into the full vision of our church, we must be strong, clear and confident in our efforts.

I am committed to the growth and renewal of our congregations, and I know that you are, too. Diocesan leaders and I are focusing and aligning our resources in order to strengthen our congregations and reach out in love. We need your help.

The Bishop’s Appeal is a critical source of funding. To meet this year’s budget, we must raise $150,000, but if we raise $300,000 we also fully fund the two new staff positions dedicated to congregational renewal and mission with young adults. Paul Budde and I have pledged $30,000 to this endeavor, and I ask you to join us. I promise that your gifts will be used wisely, fruitfully, and frugally.

Gifts to the Bishop’s Appeal help us do the work we are called to do. It is compelling and magnanimous work, far bigger than one individual, or one congregation can accomplish alone. But, with God’s help and our collective efforts, we can change the course of history, defy the doomsday scenarios of a church in decline, and be a world-transforming community of hopeful, joyful, and engaged followers of Jesus.

Thank you for your commitment, your prayers, and your generosity. I am honored to serve as your bishop.

Faithfully,

The Rt. Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde

Bishop of Washington

The Bishop's Appeal

Through the annual Bishop's Appeal, our diocese provides essential services to each of our 89 congregations. It is the major source of our operating budget, and allows for direct day-to-day services and investment in vital ministries.

What are these services? We offer guidance to parishes in finding a new rector, and provide resources during times of transition. We provide technical support for parish web sites and provide regular communications to the diocese with news and events from the diocese, parishes, schools, our affiliated organizations, and the wider church. we keep you current on developments within our Church and our culture.

In addition to parish support, funds from the Bishop's Appeal supports the following ministries:

  • Latino populations – Outreach to our Latino brothers and sisters has evolved from a few hundred members to more than 30,000 Spanish-speaking people.
  • Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys – Opened in September 2008, this is the first diocesan all boys tuition-free school for residents of the district’s underserved communities.
  • Youth Ministry – Retreats, workshops, and activities for the youth in our community.
  • Local and global outreach – Local ministries caring for the homeless to working with our partners in ministry in South Africa, Jerusalem, and Honduras.

The strength of our work in this diocese and abroad depends heavily on your generosity. Thank you for your support.
