Camp Brochure

Who?

In our first year, the summer camp will be for rising 4th - 8th graders. Non-Episcopalians are welcome.

What?

A week of Episcopal summer camping.  What is Episcopal summer camping?  Well, there’s arts and crafts, canoeing, pool time, capture the flag, nature activities, music, sports, time to just hang out, and crazy cabin bonding time.  We’ll also have  fun worship time together, cabin devotions, and other time set aside to encourage discussions about faith and God.  Some of the same stuff as your typical overnight camp just with an Episcopal flair.

Tuition:

The cost of camp is $500 per camper.  No one will be turned away for lack of funds, but everyone is expected to contribute something.  Please first go to your parish priest for camp funds and then fill out a scholarship application if additional funds are needed.

The tuition fee goes toward the cost of the camp rental, insurance for the camp, food, supplies, and the cost for camp of the many adult volunteers that are needed to serve as camp counselors

Location:

We are renting facilities at Camp Maria, a retreat and camping center on Breton Bay in southern Maryland.  There are cabins, a pool, the bay, a dining hall, an outdoor chapel, and more.  It is around 2 hours from Washington, D.C. You can learn more about Camp Maria and get more precise directions at www.campmaria.org

Due dates:

  • There are still a few spaces available for campers! Register ASAP
  • Forms and final payment due by June 1.

The Story

It has been quite some time since the Diocese of Washington has had a summer camping program.  There are a number of clergy and lay leaders who have Episcopal camping experiences in other dioceses, and these experiences as campers and counselors were instrumental in their formation as Christians and their bonds with the Episcopal Church.  In the Fall of 2011, a group gathered and started to imagine what a camping program would look like in our diocese.   We recieved a grant that enabled us to hire a consultant, Sue Cromer, who started and continues to run the camping program in the Diocese of Chicago.  She advises the Camp EDOW committee, now made up of clergy and lay leaders from all six regions of the diocese, as we plan our camping program.

The members of the Camp EDOW planning committee are:

The Rev. Cara Spacarelli - Christ Church Capitol Hill,The Rev. Sarabeth Goodwin - St Stephen and the Incarnation, The Rev. Kurt Gerhard - St Patrick's DC, Hannah Dowdy - St Peter's Poolesville, Bettianne Quinn - St Dunstan's Bethesda, Sarah Stonesifer - Christ Church Rockville, The Rev. David Wacaster - Good Shepherd Silver Spring, Mary Abe - St John's Beltsville, The Rev. Greg Syler - St George's Valley Lee, Katherine Humphries - St George's Valley Lee.
