On Oct. 16 the Latino Ministries of the Diocese of Washington had their annual celebration, with a Eucharist at St. Alban’s, D.C., followed by a magnificent party.

The procession began with the Cross of Our Savior, Silver Spring, followed by the standards of diocese’s seven Episcopal communities: San Juan (St. John’s, Lafayette Square), San Mateo (St. Matthew’s, Hyattsville), Nuestro Salvador (Our Saviour, Hillandale), San Esteban/Misa Alegría (St. Stephen and the Incarnation, D.C.), San Miguel y Todos los Ángeles (St. Michael and All Angels), Ascensión (Ascension, Gaithersburg) and St. Albano (St. Alban’s, D.C.). They were followed by readers, deacons and priests representing each of the seven communities, the two participating bishops –  Bishop John Bryson Chane and Bishop Julio Cesar Holguin of the Dominican Republic – visitors and a procession of children from the seven congregations.

Bishop Julio Cesar Olguin preached about evangelism. Participants were urged to share the gospel beyond the church doors, at work and with their families, friends and acquaintances.

"Everyone has the right to hear the Word of God," he said. He recalled with pleasure that exactly one year ago there were six Latino communities in the diocese and that the new Latino congregation of St. Alban’s, D.C. began to meet on Oct. 4, 2009, immediately following last year’s Latino Ministry Celebration.

Another highlight of the Eucharist was the offertory. All children and youth participants took part in the offertory wearing a T-shirt with the slogan: "We are part of the future of the Episcopal Church.” Soft music accompanied them as they walked down the aisle to the two bishops, who laid their hands on their heads and blessed them. At the end of the procession the teenagers brought the offering.

The Holy Mass was celebrated entirely in Spanish by Bishop John Chane. And the closing  anthem, “Soul Mission” could not have been more appropriate. Renewed in faith, the congregation left the church singing "Take me where men need your word."

And how could it be otherwise – the celebration of Latino Ministries culminated with a festive Latino-style party. Participants feasted on quesadillas, beans, guacamole and pupusas, and the cheerful music by Julio Cuellar had all who attended the reception dancing  to a Latin rhythm.

El Sábado 16 de Octubre el Ministerio Latino de la Diócesis de Washington se vistió de fiesta al realizar la celebración anual de los Ministerios Latinos, el evento consistió en la celebración de la Eucaristía en la Iglesia de San Albano y fue seguido de una magnifica fiesta en el salón de recepción de la misma.

El desfile empezó con la Cruz de Nuestro Salvador, seguido por los estandartes de las 7 comunidades episcopales: San Juan, San Mateo, Nuestro Salvador, San Esteban y la encarnación, San Miguel y todos los Ángeles, La Ascensión y San Albano. Luego los lectores, diáconos, clérigos visitantes, los sacerdotes que conducen cada uno de las 7 comunidades, los Obispos que participaron: Nuestro Obispo de Washington John Chaney y el Obispo visitante Julio César Holguín y cerrando la procesión los niños de las siete congregaciones.

El Predicador Rev. Julio Cesar Olguín, Obispo de la República Dominicana dedicó el Sermón a la evangelización. Nos motivó a compartir la Buena Nueva más allá de las puertas de la iglesia, en nuestros trabajos, nuestras familias, con nuestros amigos y conocidos, “Todo el mundo tiene el derecho a escuchar la Palabra de Dios”, determinó. Recordó con alegría que exactamente hace un año éramos seis las comunidades Latinas y que el mismo presidió la creación de la congregación de San Albano, el domingo 4 de Octubre del año pasado.

Otro momento culminante de la eucaristía fue el ofertorio. Todos los niños y jóvenes asistentes participaron en el ofertorio luciendo una camiseta con el lema: “Somos parte del futuro de la Iglesia Episcopal”, una música suave les acompañaba, mientras caminaban por el centro de la iglesia hacia los Obispos John Chaney y Julio César Olguín quienes les imponían las manos en las cabezas los bendecían conforme se acercaban a ellos. Al final de la procesión los adolescentes entregaron las ofrendas.

La Santa Eucarística fue celebrada enteramente en español por el Obispo John Chaney demostrando una vez más  su gran corazón para con la comunidad Latina en nuestra diócesis y fuera de ella.

Finalmente para el himno de salida no podía ser más apropiado el tema “Alma Misionera”. Renovados en la fe, salimos con el propósito firme de ser misioneros entonando los versos
“Llévame donde los hombres necesiten tu palabra.”

Y como no podía ser de otro modo, la celebración de los Ministerios Latinos culminó con una fiesta a nuestro estilo, compartimos quesadillas, frijoles, pupusas y guacamole. La alegre música a cargo de Julio Cuellar hizo que todos los asistentes a la recepción bailaran al ritmo latino.
