Meet the Nominees

Meet the five candidates who have been chosen by the Diocese of Washington’s Search and Nominating Committee to stand for election as the Ninth Bishop of Washington on June 18: The Rev. Ronald G. Abrams of St. James’, Wilmington, N.C., the Rev. Dr. Mariann Edgar Budde, of St. John’s, Minneapolis, Minn., the Very Rev. Samuel Glenn Candler, of the Cathedral of St. Philip, Atlanta, the Rev. Jane Gould, of St. Stephen’s, Lynn, Mass., and the Rev. Canon John T.W. Harmon, of Trinity, D.C.

In order that we might get to know them a little better, the Transition Committee asked each of the candidates to provide a short biography and answer two questions for Washington Window readers:
  • “What film or book have you found especially inspiring?” and
  • “How has your perception of the Diocese of Washington changed during this discernment process and how has this contributed to you feeling called to be our next bishop?”
Previously, the candidates were asked to supply a résumé and respond to three detailed questions about their perceived call to be our next bishop. These can be found on the search website.
There will be an opportunity to meet each of the candidates in person at a series of walkabouts, set for May 22-27 at locations around the diocese.
Information about the Special Convention to Elect the Ninth Bishop of Washington, set for June 18 at Washington National Cathedral, can be found here.
