Wondering what to do with the children after school is out? Check out these summer camps taking place in and around the Diocese of Washington.
In the diocese:
MUSIC AND ARTS CAMP
Christ Church, Durham will host a Music and Arts Camp for children ages 6-12 from June 29 to July 3. The camp will be led by renowned vocalist Alicia Cordell. The Rev. David MacDonald will serve as camp historian while a staff of musicians and artists focus on teaching basic musicianship and artistry. The week will conclude with a choral concert, an exhibition of the visual arts projects created throughout the week, and a cook-out for all the participants and their guests. All participants are asked to bring a snack and a bag lunch daily. Non-carbonated beverages will be served throughout the day. Non-refundable fee of $45/child at the time of enrollment; remaining fee of $45 is due by June 22. Some scholarships are available. SUMMER MUSIC CAMP
There are still several spaces available for The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer’s fourth annual Summer Music Camp, Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17, 2009, 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily. The camp, designed for children and youth ages 7-15 (campers must have completed first grade), is staffed by three professional musical educators from the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Tuition for the week is $325. Camp highlights include:
- Utilization of portions of the Orff and Dalcroze methodologies
- Study of rhythm through motion
- Study of basic vocal production and solfege
- Introduction to reading musical notation
- Session on the relationship between Math and Music with NSO cellist Yvonne Caruthers
- Arts and Crafts
- Organized outdoor recreation time on the church grounds
- Visit to the historic carousel at Glen Echo Park
- Nature Walk
- Lunch and a snack provided daily
- Teacher/student ratio approximately 1 to 6
