Focus Groups
  • “Perception is Reality”

  • Robert Anton Franken
52
"Diocese missing a sense of..."
  • Diocese missing a sense of community & connectedness
  • There has never been a Mission Strategy in the diocese
  • Lack of communications: Church House, council, etc
  • Need Hispanic/Latino Ministry, long-term Diocesan $’s
  • Diocese changes rules mid-stream which make progress difficult (i.e. mission to parish process)
  • Parish Bounds are a problem
  • Parish Bounds are not followed so no problem
  • Diocesan promise for money to help with building not always kept - some get help others get no help
  • Need joint sponsorship of missions rather than 1 congregation
53
"Some loans to congregations from..."
  • Some loans to congregations from the diocese have never been paid back and no good accounting exists
  • Need for transparent diocesan operation
  • The Diocese is saddled with a colonial sub-structure
  • Often church buildings are poorly sited &/or too small
  • Redevelopment will create conflict
  • DC doesn’t think of itself as multi-cultural
  • Rock Creek Park is a real divide in Washington DC
  • There is increasing competition for Sunday am
  • Race creates 2 worlds in this diocese
54
"Diocese has missed opportunities for..."
  • Diocese has missed opportunities for new congregations
  • Race is a problem when there is a wide divide in education & economic
  • Some churches do not have the required audits
  • The “regions” are gerrymandered
  • The southern regions are isolated
  • Lay leadership is ebbing
  • Provincialism causes resistance to change
  • Some see the Episcopal church as snooty, backwards looking, contentious, clannish.

55
Observations
  • “Change is the law of life.
  • And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future”
  • John F. Kennedy

20 Fastest Growth Areas
  • 19 total churches in these areas however 1 area has 6 churches
    • Median ASA of these Churches is 149
    • Population of this area is1,091,000
    • Projected Growth of area in next five years is 82,000
    • Current Potential Episcopalians is 43,500
    • New Episcopalians based on growth is 3,300
  • 5 of these areas have no Churches
  • At least 5 appear to be significantly underserved
58
"19 Churches are not in..."
  • 19 Churches are not in any ImagineArea
  • 7 ImagineAreas have more than 10% Hispanic/Latino population
  • 13 ImagineAreas have more than 10% Asian population -including much of Montgomery county
59
Recommendations
  • “Don’t be afraid to take a big step when one is indicated.  You can’t cross a chasm in two small steps.”
  • David Lloyd George
60

61

62

63

64
Other Recommendations
  • Review all small congregations - determine their needs
  • Research identified high growth areas
  • Determine where and how to purchase land in future growth areas
  • Revise Constitution and Canons to eliminate Parish Bounds
65
More Recommendations
  • In a real way deal with issues of race and changing cultures
  • Revise Regional Boundaries to make natural geographic, affinity, or size groupings
  • Continue improve communications - create an open system that lets all affected “players” see what is going on
66
Multi-cultural Recommendations
  • Review 7 circle areas where Hispanic/Latino is greater than 10 percent of the population
  • Review 13 circle areas where Asian is greater than 10 percent of the population
  • Develop a diocesan strategy for multi-cultural ministry, possibly using single sites for multiple congregations because often cultural groups need/want separate svc.
