Wise Men (Ecuador)
This nativity from Ecuador is handmade in terra cotta. The small round figures are hollow and have tiny feet and expressive faces. They are dressed in traditional clothing of the region. One of the Wise Men, in the form of a villager, wears a colored striped and patterned earth-toned robe and white hat. Note the ribbed “stitched” detail on the crown of the hat. He holds a tiny black sheep in his large hands. Note the details of his fingernails, pursed lips, raised eyebrows and downcast eyes as well as his round nose and “ropy” black hair. The second Wise Man wears a white hat with a rolled brim. He is dressed in a red striped poncho over a long-sleeved white shirt. His head is tilted slightly and he holds an ear of corn in its green husk in his hands. The third Wise Man wears a green hat and a red cloak with a woven diamond pattern on the edge. In this figure, the clay has been pressed into a piece of fabric and has picked up the fine woven texture on its surface. He brings a tiny white chicken with a red wattle, feet and comb.
