Holy Family
(New Mexico)
This Native American nativity from New Mexico was made on the Isleta Pueblo. The figures were created from clay with a white slipware glaze. After the figures have been fired, the glaze is burnished or polished with a stone. Note
that even though the figures contain only four colors, each pattern used on the
robes is unique. All the human figures have mouths opened in an "O" of wonder
and astonishment, even though their eyes are demurely lowered. The Child is
presented in an elevated pedestal, and is clothed in a tiny robe similar to the ones
worn by the adult figures.
