Donkey (Kenya)
The elegant stone crèche from Kenya was hand-crafted by the soapstone carvers of the Akamba tribe of the Kisii District, Tabaka , Kenya . This soapstone is called kisii stone. The craftsmen model each form using simple hand tools, usually consisting of only a chisel and a rough file. A piece of sandpaper is used to achieve the final smooth finish. No machinery is used in the process. The animals are wonderfully simple in form, including this rather triangular ass with mane and curved front legs.
