Mary (Mexico)
This figure is from a beaded Mexican crèche made by the Huichol Indians of the Sierra Madre area of the regions of Jalisco and Nayarit. These are inaccessible regions found in northern Mexico . The Huichol are noted in modern Mexico for the degree to which they have preserved their native speech, religion and culture. This pottery crèche is completely covered by thousands of tiny glass beads, put together in many intricate patterns. Mary kneels, with red flowers in her long black hair. Note her rosy cheeks and the decorated bands forming her skirt.
