Joseph (Russia)
This figure is from a hand-carved wooden set from Russia that depicts the Holy Family as Russian peasants. Joseph's shoes lace up over white gaiters into which he has tucked his striped pants. His blue linen tunic has rolled sleeves and embroidered details at the neck and hem as well as an embroidered sash. He wears a typical soft Russian tweed cap over his blunt cut hair; his beard is slightly grizzled with grey. He holds a lit lantern, symbolizing Christ, the “light which is coming into the world.”
