Nativity (Haiti)
The artists and craftspeople of Haiti have made art from available materials for years. Some of their most famous creations are metal sculptures and plaques created from discarded metal oil drums, as is this colorful crèche. The pieces were cut from the scrap metal, painted and then welded together to create a three dimensional piece made up of two dimensional images. The figures of Mary and Joseph are dressed as contemporary Haitians. The Three Wise Men were all cut from one piece of metal. Two gray, horned, quizzical sheep complete the scene.
