Mary (Indiana)
This figure is from a lovely soft-toned crèche on loan to Washington National Cathedral. It was created by CeCe Luebke of New Harmony, IN, the talented sister-in-law of Joe Luebke, the Cathedral's Director of Horticulture and Grounds. It was hand carved out of linden wood, bass wood, and pine and was inspired by a traditional nativity the family had when she was a child. Mary kneels, wearing a white veil and a flowing pale blue cloak. One hand reaches toward the Child, the other covers her heart. Her tiny blue eyes look upward; note the expression of awe on her face.
