Angel and Cow (Kenya)
These figures are from a
fascinating crèche from Kenya made using the most ordinary discarded materials. The figures are first modeled from thick wire and are then wound with pieces of torn cloth to produce the basic form of the bodies. These forms are then dressed with tiny scraps of brightly colored native fabrics. Notice the angel's dramatic, long white wings. The animal's body is first stuffed with fiber and then wrapped. The cow is a significant emblem of wealth in Africa.
