Long-horned Steer and Sheep (Texas)
These animals are part of a needlepoint crèche that came to the Cathedral as a gift from the "Saintly Stitchers" from St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas. In 1991, this talented group made a crèche and tree ornaments for the White House. While in Washington to deliver their creation, they stopped to view that year's crèche exhibit here at Washington National Cathedral. They were so impressed with the exhibit that they offered to create a crèche for the Cathedral's use. Twenty-four needle workers worked to create the crèche, which incorporated elements of Texas culture into the traditional nativity scene. Note the Texas long horn steer. The sheep is made with little French knots and has a working bell around its neck.
