Joseph and the Christ Child (Cameroon)
These simple figures are carved from padouk wood, a tree native to the southern part of Cameroon. The color of the figures is the natural tint of the unstained wood. The unique feature of this crèche is that Joseph is depicted holding the Christ Child. His folded hands create a platform on which the Child reclines. The figure of the Child himself is a simple, rounded shape. Note that the His smiling face is simply a smaller version of the faces of the adult figures.
