Mary holds the Child in her arms; note her and Joseph's enormous hands, complete with nails and knuckles. Joseph seems to be smiling behind his beard; his eyes crinkle up at the corners. Each figure utilizes tiny rolls of clay to create not just hair, but in the case of the men, fanciful beards and mustaches. The unglazed clay of the faces depict even the wrinkles and laugh lines of each figure.
