Villager and Baby
(South Africa)
This ceremonial doll, called a Ndebele, was made by Zulu tribeswomen and reflects the fine craftsmanship and attention to detail characteristic of Zulu arts and crafts. The figure is made from a simple black fabric form, covered with countless multicolored glass beads. Concentric circles of these tiny beads form the garments of the figures, and white beads are also used to create the unique facial features. This tall woman wears a “dress” of multi-colored beads
edged with lacquered seeds. She wears bronze neck rings and red drop
earrings and tiny black beads denote her closely cropped hair. Note that she
carries a sleeping baby on her back.
