Nativity Icon
(Washington, DC)
This wooden icon in the Byzantine style was carved by Washington
National Cathedral's 1994 Artist-in-Residence, Michael Kapetan, from linden wood or
basswood. It depicts Mary and the Christ
Child reclining in a rocky cave in the mountains. Above them shines a flowerlike
star. Joseph sits pensively at Mary's feet near a grove of trees.
