2018 Regional Election Results

For the first time in 2018, the Diocese of Washington clergy, wardens, and convention delegates participated in online voting for candidates for the regional elections. 

Standing Committee

The Standing Committee is a body that has eight members, including four priests and four laypersons. Under the Episcopal Church Canons, the Standing Committee has three principal responsibilities. It must approve all candidates for ordination, determine whether to approve
requests from parishes that wish to sell or encumber real property. In addition, the Standing Committee serves as the counsel of advice to the Bishop of the Diocese.

Each region may select up to one priest and one layperson to be among the nominees for election to the Standing Committee at the upcoming annual Diocesan Convention. The following nominees were selected by the regions:

 

NORTH MONTGOMERY COUNTY REGION

CENTRAL MONTGOMERY COUNTY REGION

Lee Puricelli Lay Nominee: Lee Puricelli

 I am completing my first term on the Bishop's Standing Committee and would be honored to serve again. At Christ Church Kensington I chair the Adult Formation ministry, lead a Bible study, and mentor Education for Ministry (EfM). Also, I am one of the diocesan coordinators for EfM. I am dedicated to the fostering of lay ministries and to evangelism.

 

SOUTH MONTGOMERY COUNTY REGION

NORTH DC REGION

Kay PiersonLay Nominee: Kay Pierson

Kay Pierson oversees housing and community revitalization for the United Planning Organization. She has a BA from George Washington, a juris doctor from Howard University and is completing an MBA from Georgetown. A member of Trinity Episcopal Church for over 23 years, she was senior warden from 2008-2009 and director of the Eucharistic Lay Ministry for over 13 years. She is a member of the choir, Daughters of the King and the Trinity Episcopal Church Women. She now serves on the vestry and heads up Trinity’s United Thank Offering campaign.

 

CENTRAL DC REGION

Erika GilmoreLay Nominee: Erika Gilmore

Erika is currently a member of EDOW's Standing Committee, and would be delighted to continue in order to further serve the diocese. She started in the Diocese while a student at Howard University where she was president of the Anglican student ministry group, AJSA. Joining St. George's, DC after college, she served shy of a decade on the vestry and was project manager for the church's major renovation project. Erika also serves on the Resolutions Committee and the Campus Ministry Advisory Group.
 

Glenna HuberClergy Nominee: The Rev. Glenna Huber

Rev. Glenna Huber is currently Rector at Church of the Epiphany in downtown D.C. She has also served as a consultant for urban congregations on the efficacy of community organizing in congregational development.  Rev. Huber has served on the Race and Reconciliation Commisson, and Standing Committee, in the Diocese of Maryland; in the Diocese of Washington elected to serve as Alternate Delegate to General Convention 2018. Board member of The Bishop Claggett Camp and Conference center, and Episcopal Urban Caucus.

NORTH PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY REGION

Sheila McJiltonClergy Nominee: The Rev. Dr. Sheila McJilton 

The Rev. Dr. Sheila McJilton has been rector of St. Philip’s Parish in Laurel, MD since 2007. She has served on the COM, Diocesan Council, and is finishing a first term on Standing Committee. She is also currently the President of the Standing Committee. She was Alternate Deputy for EDOW to General Convention in 2012, 2015 and 2018. She is grateful for the chance to serve on Standing Committee and would be honored to serve this diocese for a second term.

 

SOUTHERN MARYLAND REGION

Kate HeichlerClergy Nominee: The Rev. Kate Heichler

I came to the Diocese after 12 years of ordained ministry in Connecticut, where I chaired the Diocesan Missions Committee, served in other diocesan ministries, and was priest-in-charge of a parish. I served St. Columba's DC as Associate for Worship and Outreach before being called as rector of two congregations in Southern Maryland, Christ Church in La Plata, and Christ Church in Wayside. I am excited about our Diocese's capacity for growth, fostering collaboration, and joyfully engaging congregations in God's mission.

 

Diocesan Council

The Diocesan Council serves as the governing board of the Diocese and, much like a parish vestry, has the responsibility for fiduciary oversight and general leadership of the Diocese. 

Each of the eight regions of the Diocese elects one lay and one clerical member to serve on Diocesan Council. Members of Diocesan Council serve for three-year terms. Terms on Diocesan Council are staggered, so that approximately one-third of the regional representatives are elected each fall. This year, three regions had open positions for clergy regional representatives and three regions had open positions for lay regional representatives on the Diocesan Council:

 

 NORTH MONTGOMERY COUNTY REGION

There were no open positions for Diocesan Council from the North Montgomery region this year.

 

CENTRAL MONTGOMERY COUNTY REGION

Kathleen StaudtLay Representative: Kathleen Staudt

I have belonged to Our Saviour since 1990, serving as Adult Formation Coordinator, prayer group leader, vestry member, stewardship chair, givings recorder and Senior Warden. I am also the parish rep to Samaritan Ministry,volunteering as lead caseworker at Samaritan's Silver Spring office at Our Saviour. A poet, academic, and spiritual director, I teach theology & the arts at Wesley and VTS.

 

SOUTH MONTGOMERY COUNTY REGION

Sari AteekClergy Representative: The Rev. Sari Ateek 
I served on Diocesan Council in the Diocese of Los Angeles eight years ago, and very much believe in the importance and strategic role of this leadership body in setting the tone for the health and impact of our diocese. I recently concluded three years as chair of our diocesan HR committee, and having just journeyed through a multi-phased strategic visioning process with my own parish, I would like to bring some of my experience to Diocesan Council at this critical juncture in time as we begin a diocesan strategic planning process.

 

NORTH DC REGION

There were no open positions for Diocesan Council from the North DC region this year.

 

CENTRAL DC REGION

Dominique PeridansClergy Representative: The Rev. Dominique Peridans 

Dominique Peridans was born in Washington. After studies in Psychology, he spent 3 years with L’Arche in Brussels, Belgium, and then joined the Congregation of St. Jean, a Roman Catholic monastic order, with whom he spent 14 years and was ordained a priest. In 2013, Dominique received a Master of Science in Pastoral Counseling at Loyola, Maryland, and was received as a priest in the Episcopal Church. He has been Rector of Ascension and Saint Agnes since September of 2017. Of Belgian immigrant parents, Dominique is bilingual French-English.

 

SOUTH DC REGION

Emma TuckerLay Representative: Emma Tucker 

Emma Tucker is a 6+ year member of Christ Church Capitol Hill, where she has been active across Vestry, Executive Committee, and many facets of parish life. She has previously served in the Trinity Volunteer Corps and continues to volunteer at an Episcopal camp. In addition to her enthusiasm for Episcopal Church, she brings a broad array of skills from her experience in social services and associations, including working with volunteer committees and budgets, and resolving conflicting perspectives to move a community forward.

 

 NORTH PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY REGION

Melana Nelson-AmakerClergy Representative: The Rev. Melana Nelson-Amaker 

I’ve been St. Christopher’s rector nearly 5 years. I love our parish’s international culture and strong youth presence; and value EDoW’s broad ethnic and cultural diversity. Passions include worship/liturgy, prayer, and nurturing the spiritual lives of all ages. My BA is in writing from Carnegie-Mellon. I got a first-rate biblical education at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. I’ve consulted for parishes and led a young adult Episcopal Service Corps. Previous work in VA and MD includes Standing Committee; interim ministry; spiritual direction.

 

SOUTHERN MARYLAND REGION

Jo AppoldLay Representative: Jo Ann Appold

For the past 32 years, I’ve worked for CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. I have been a member of Christ Church-Clinton since 1983. I started in the choir, became a Sunday School teacher in 1991. Currently, I am the Sunday School Director, Co-Chair of the Music & Worship/Education Ministry, Chair Stewardship Committee, Altar Guildand am the Lay Delegate for Christ Church-Clinton. I currently serve as the Southern Maryland Lay Representative to the Diocesan Council.
